Torrent Power Eyes 800-MW Upgrade as Sabarmati Plant Retires

Torrent Power Ltd. has confirmed that its 362-MW AMGEN coal-fired power station in Ahmedabad will officially cease operations after December 2030. The retirement of the landmark facility will support the ongoing urban transformation of the Sabarmati Riverfront district as it prepares for high-profile developments, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the new high-speed rail network.

To maintain long-term generation capacity, Torrent has initiated plans to construct a replacement ~800-MW thermal power unit. The proposed project is slated for construction outside Gujarat to leverage optimized coal transportation routes. The initiative has received endorsement from the Gujarat State government and is currently awaiting central coal linkage approval from the Ministry of Power.
